NMVTIS
The US National Motor Vehicle Title Information System; a federal database of title brands and theft.
The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) is a federal database operated by the US Department of Justice that consolidates vehicle title and brand information from US state DMVs, insurance carriers, salvage yards and auction houses. Federal law requires participation: state DMVs must report title transfers and brands; insurers and salvage operators must report total losses and salvage acquisitions within 30 days.
NMVTIS is the most authoritative source for title brand history on a US vehicle. Approved consumer-access providers (a list maintained at vehiclehistory.gov) sell single-VIN reports for $2–$13. The NMVTIS report shows the title brand history (salvage, junk, flood, etc.), the most recent reported odometer reading, and the vehicle’s presence in any reported salvage or auction transaction.
NMVTIS does not include accident history that didn’t result in a title brand, service records, or photographic evidence — for those, buyers cross-reference with Carfax or AutoCheck reports and with auction records like ours.
