Primary Damage
The auction-listed designation for the most significant damage on the vehicle.
Primary damage is the auction’s single-line description of the most significant damage observed on a vehicle at intake inspection. Common primary damage codes at Copart and IAA include: Front End, Rear End, Side, All Over, Mechanical, Water/Flood, Fire, Roll Over, Hail, Vandalism, Burn (Engine), Burn (Interior), Theft Recovery, Stripped, and Undercarriage.
The primary damage code is the single most important quick-scan signal for evaluating a salvage lot. All Over, Roll Over, Burn and Water codes indicate severe structural or systemic damage requiring expert rebuild. Front End, Rear End and Hail are usually more straightforward cosmetic rebuilds depending on severity.
Many vehicles also carry a secondary damage code documenting a second area of impact. Cross-reference primary damage with the photo set, the Run and Drive status, and the airbag deployment status before deciding on a maximum bid.
